[xtm-wg] Important information about moving to OASIS

First, congratulations on your decision to advance your working
group to the level of an OASIS Member Section!

This decision will mean many things for many of you in the future,
but the immediate benefits you will see are increased
infrastructure (without doing it yourself!), improved public
relations and a much higher level of acceptance and credibility
for your work.  History has shown greater contributions to work
under the OASIS umbrella, increased recognition and adoption of
the completed work.  Topic Maps will undoubtedly receive the same,
from our existing members and the XML community at large.

We have begun the process of transition, but we need your help.
While we work on moving and improving web pages, mail lists,
archives etc, we need to align all XTM participants with OASIS.
If you and/or your employer are not already members of OASIS, now
is the time to start the process.  My experience is that many
companies require a few weeks of paperwork prior to submitting a
member application, so it behooves you to look into it now.

A few words about the process of joining OASIS...  We are an open
consortium, everyone is welcome to join and support our efforts
and contribute to the technical work of any or all our Technical
Committees.  Once you submit an application, it takes a day or two
at our end to process it, and then all employees are eligible to
participate in Technical Committees, subscribe to any mail list,
attend member meetings and networking receptions etc.  If your
application is not paid by credit card, we still process
immediately and allow immediate participation.  We allow 30 days
for payment by either check or wire transfer, but ask that if that
will be a problem for your internal process to alert me to that,
so we may accommodate-to the extent possible.

Obviously, everyone on this list is considering joining OASIS to
continue with Topic Maps, but there is much more to OASIS
membership.  There is significant marketing value for your
company, so please include your marketing staff in your member
application or address them to me, so I can help them to better
know the values we offer.  There are of course, many other OASIS
Technical Committees, detailed on our website.

consortium, the Technical Committees and the different levels of
membership available to you.  Please feel free to ask me any
questions you may have in this process.  I am available to you to
ensure a smooth transition and to make certain you are aware of
and take full benefit from the variety of benefits and services we
provide our members.
