Subject: [topicmaps-comment] Real Names and Keywords

Hello all

I've already in the frame of the PubSubj TC pointed at www.realnames.com

Real Names is a company selling products called Keywords and Keywords Plus
(trademarks). The technology is fully compatible with Microsoft Network and
Internet Explorer, and related with UDDI Registries.

Some excerpts from Real Names Web Site:

"A Keyword is a better Web address. It makes it easier to get directly to the
site you're looking for without having to know the "dot com" address. Just type
in the name of the company, product or website you're looking for in the
Internet Explorer address bar and you'll go directly to the official site.
Keywords are easy to use, and there is nothing to download or install."

"Keywords are natural, native language terms that reflect your company's unique
brand or identity. Keywords are your tool to help drive qualified traffic to
your website, to simplify navigation to your website, and increase the
visibility and sales potential of your online presence. Your Keyword is your
marquee on the Web."

"Keywords Plus are for customers with high traffic websites wanting to protect
their online brand. All Keyword Plus registrations are reviewed by Keyword
Analysts prior to approval for a one-time fee of $299. Once approved as the
valid owner, each Keyword Plus registration is $199 annually, in most
countries."

"Keywords are not meta tags or Domain Names. Keywords are not generic terms,
which include "common terms" found in the dictionary, or those which are
synonymous with an entire category of goods, products or services."

Some notable exceptions unfortunately to the latest rule. For example "sun",
"windows", "word", "passport" ... and certainly many more ... have been
registered as Keywords (try to type them in your IE address bar)

That is something everyone dealing with any kind of Web Ontology effort
(including Published Subjects) should be aware of. I don't figure exactly what
is the relevant attitude against this process ... Step in? Ignore? Fight back?
