Regarding comment #9, the CSAR archive format is zip (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zip_%28file_format%29) which contains a 32bit CRC for integrity. Specifically, content at the URL states:
"The zip format uses a 32-bit CRC algorithm and includes two copies of the directory structure of the archive to provide greater protection against data loss."
The TC chose Zip because it is a well supported format in addition to allowing random access (versus other archive formats which only allow streaming access). Zip tools commonly validate this CRC and emit some kind of error when it is invalid.
