Recently this discussion came up again in our company and we settled on using this as our guide for wording:

http://www.sei.cmu.edu/library/abstracts/reports/00sr004.cfm (Documenting Architectural Layers). Chapter 2, especially 2.7.  Starting on page 23 can also take you more quickly to the point.
