Subject: unspsc report
Hi Fellow Team Members, The UNSPSC (United Nations Standard Products and Services Code) is a classification convention that is used to numerically identify all products and services. It is a comprehensive and flexible system maintained for the UN by the Uniform Code Council Inc of New Jersey. Membership is open to individuals, companies and organizations. As a member you are entitled to put forward recommendations for new codes, or modifications to existing codes. These are then voted upon by the membership. As far as copyright is involved the following position has been adopted by the UNSPSC: "The UNSPSC is available for use, free of charge, to any person or entity that wants to use it. UNDP has never charged for use of the UNSPSC, as that is not in keeping with their mission. In fact, UNDP expressly requires the code manager to make the UNSPSC available free of charge. The UNDP permits the code management organization to charge a nominal fee for those who wish to participate more fully in UNSPSC? maintenance and evolution. UNDP monitors the fee closely to ensure that it is reasonable and will allow the largest possible number of individuals, companies or organizations to be included in ongoing code development. The UCC will ensure that members are given plenty of notice of any fees are determined to be necessary in order to provide quality services to UNSPSC members." The UNSPSC is a hierarchical classification with five levels. These levels allow you to drill down or up to analyze expenditures at the level relevant to your needs. In addition a unique key is associated with each actual classification entry. In this way codes can be accessed via both keys, the classification key and the actual entry key. The UNSPSC is currently at version 6.031 - it has 55 top level segment categories. Please refer to the attached spreadsheet. Comparing the classifications to the Industry and Services classifications from the Lisa MAP project there are quite a few omissions in the current UNSPSC codes, most notably "Software Localization". To summarize: The UNSPSC is a well thought out, open and comprehensive encoding system. There are some omissions in comparison with that of the Lisa industry and service segments, but this could be simply rectified by applying for these to be added to the UNSPSC classification. The only negative factor being the time that these amendments/additions take to come into effect. Please find attached a copy of the UNSPSC code set including top level and individual segment codes and descriptions and a copy of the Lisa Map industry and services sections for comparison.
