Subject: RE: [trans-ws] SOAP Attachments

Hi Andrzej,

When Stephen originally came up with the idea of totally abandoning
attachments in favour of URI I suggested that we include an optional web
method that allows uploading a file as an attachment and retrieve an URI
for it, something like:

uploadFile

Input:
- SOAP attachment (DIME?)

Output:
- URI that can be used to reference the uploaded file in future calls to
the web service

I personally is still of the opinion that this is a pretty useful
compromise.

* It is an optional part of the specification which means that
implementers of the web service are not required to support it, but
callers can easily find out if it is supported or not by simply querying
for it.

* We can still draw the full benefits of the use of URIs throughout the
system. If the uploadFile method is not implemented, or if working with
files that are not suitable to submit as attachment, or for other
reasons why attachments may not be a good choice the data can still be
passed around using URIs only.

* For web service callers, the existence of the uploadFile method means
that they have a known means of transferring data (at least data for
which the SOAP attachments is a useful protocol), which does not require
the caller to provide and manage the lifetime of a URI that is
accessible by the web service implementation. Thus the calling can be
made "one-directional" - the caller calls the service, but not the other
way around. This can simplify implementations significantly. This also
means a lot better control over security related issues, both for the
web service implementation and the caller.

As you may remember from the voting, I explicitly cast my vote
conditionally for the URI-only option, pending that we could resolve
this kind of issues.

Best regards,
Magnus

Subject: [trans-ws] SOAP Attachments

Hi Everyone,

I have been grappling with the SOAP with attachments issue over the
past few days, based on the feedback from Ian Harris.

I would like to consider allowing SOAP with attachments as an
<emph>option</emph> for small files for requestQuote, submitJob and
retrieveJob only.

What does everyone think?

Thanks in advance,

AZ
