Not in the current version of Acrobat/Reader. However, we recognize that
that is a critical requirement going forward.

 

In the interim, the PDF remains the document of record for the validity of
signatures on the data.

I note that you can digitally sign the pdf but the exported data does not
appear to be signed. Is this possible? I suppose it would need the schema to
include tags for the signature/hash etc?

Thanks for the suggestions on how to get the PDF file to the list.

 

This time I've zipped the file and renamed the extension to .zpi.

 

Hopefully it will go through this time.

 

Assuming that it does, then obviously you would need to rename it to .zip
and then extract the file.

 

I'm particularly interested in trying to understand what the requirements
would be to make these kinds of forms useful for general purposes. For
example, if I add a country field, should I populate a drop down box with
the UBL country code list?

 

It seems like it might be very difficult to generate one or just a few
general purpose forms. For example, if the you look at the sample in the UBL
download for Joinery dispatch, it has completely different headers and line
item details. If there are very many of these industry specific formats,
then it might not make sense to try and develop forms for each one. 

 

Anyway, I'd be interested in any comments.

Hi All,

 

I've been doing a little experimenting to see how Adobe's support for XML in
PDF could be applied to UBL.

 

I've put together a sample form that shows how a dynamic interactive PDF
form can be combined with UBL.

 

I would appreciate any feedback or comments you might have on this sample
form.

 

What I did was I took the example of the static PDF dispatch example form
that is included in the UBL zip file, and I converted it into a dynamic
interactive PDF form using the Adobe Designer product.

 

This includes the ability to be able to manually add and delete line items
from the form by clicking on the add item button at the top of the item
detail header or on the X button next to each line item.

 

I then imported the UBL-DespatchAdvice-1.0-Office-Example.xml file into the
Designer and did a binding between the xml and the form fields.

 

I've attached a blank version of the sample form. I've also enabled the form
with Adobe Reader Extensions so those of you who only have the free Adobe
reader should also be able to use the form to enter data and be able to
import and export sample xml data files into and out of the form. You will
probably need version 7.0 of the Reader to be able to work with the form
correctly (though six might work also, but I haven't tested it). Reader is
available on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

 

I've also attached a sample of the XML output from the blank form. You can
create this yourself by opening the form in Reader and then go to the
Document menu item->forms->export form data.

 

Of course, you can also enter data directly into the form. Then, when you
export the data, the data that you entered will be in the appropriate places
in the resulting xml data file.

 

Of course, if you already have an existing xml data file, you can import it
into the form and it will be automatically populated into the form. I've
attached the sample data from UBL download for your convenience. You can
import this directly into the form by going to the Document menu
item->forms->import form data->browse to the location where you have saved
the sample data file.

 

I'd be interested in any comments or feedback you might have on this sample.
For example, do you see any benefits to this approach? Would it be useful to
be able to send somebody a PDF file from an Order like this and them be able
to have them extract the data in the UBL format so they could then use it
for their own processing needs? It seems to me like this would eliminate the
need for re-keying of data, thereby saving time and avoiding the inevitable
errors associated with re-keying. Does that make sense?

 

If anybody has any ideas for improvements or enhancements or ideas for
requirements that would be needed to be included in such forms to make the
usable in a real world situation or for general purposes, please let me
know.
