Iâm interested. I think the hub-hub smp/Sml protocols around peppol are an anachronism.  

A VC/DID approach to e-invoicing would be far more scalable, far more secure, far more privacy preserving, and far cheaper to operate

As a test, Iâm currently implementing the UBL Invoice schema as a set of linked Verifiable Credentials (where the links, of course, are based on DIDs).  Hereâs a (somewhat opaque and incomplete) example:
