It was a corrupted file in my environment, and 
there are no problems with the file in the 
release.  Sorry 'bout that, I accidentally 
overwrote the first file in the directory with a tarball archive.

I just recreated my test environment with fresh 
files from the PRD3 directory, Roberto, and I am 
still not experiencing any problems in my Linux 
environment with the use of Xerces in the val/ subdirectory.

Please let me know if you can characterize your 
problems with any more details that may help determine what is going on.
