Many thanks from Beijing too, Chet.

Thanks Peter. In that case, I will leave everything as it is. You all can get in touch any time for help with rechartering.

Hi Chet,

Thanks a lot for the detailed info. If we can recharter the TC in accordance with an extended scope, then we should keep the TC, as I'm not expecting the name or IPR mode to change. Thus, I'm seconding Alex.

Best regards
Peter

Hi Peter,

Re rechartering, we simplified it in a previous update to the TC Process approved by the Board and we are making it even easier and quicker right now.

There are a few limitations on rechartering. The TC name or its IPR mode cannot be changed. So the official name would remain "OASIS Unstructured Operation Markup Language eXtended (UOML-X) TC," the abbreviation would remain uoml-x (and thus all email archives, web pages, etc), and the IPR mode would remain RF on RAND mode. The only other limitation that could affect the TC is that any work contributed under the previous charter must be resubmitted under the new charter. Generally this is accomplished by having a TC member from the organization that original made the contribution reconfirm that it can be used under the revised charter. Generally that hasn't proved a problem. We can discuss further if you want.

Beyond that, expanding the scope of activity addressed by the TC is up to the members. The members of the MQTT went through a major rechartering exercise earlier this year. The link to their charter page shows how the revised charter is presented to the public: https://www.oasis-open.org/committees/mqtt/charter.php

So yes it would be possible to recharter and expand the scope, e.g. into big data. And of course update the deliverables and pretty much do anything else that you all want to make part of a new expanded scope. And if you thought it would be useful, OASIS could help with promotion, out reach and recruitment.

Best,

Chet, Alex,

let me first ask some questions.

@Alex: UOML v1 is already 8 years old, thus technology has evolved over the years. Will the scope of UOML be significantly different or broaden, if we should be resuming the TC?

@Chet: As far as I remember adjusting the TC charter caused by change of scope is subject to certain limitations under OASIS TC policies. Would it be possible to recharter the TC according to sub-section 2.12 [1], if we keep the TC alive?

Best regards
Peter

Chet,

The TC is inative due to weak marketing needs. However, I think the big data analysis of unstructured document will be stronger in future, thus I think we’d better to keep this TC.

Members of the UOML-X TC,

I have been reviewing the status of TCs recently. I noticed that the UOML-X TC has been inactive for some time now. From the email list and the document archive, it looks like the TC has been inactive since late 2014.

Do you think the TC is likely to start up work again or is it perhaps time for the TC to close?

There is certainly nothing wrong with declaring victory and wrapping things up. All the TC's work, publications and historical record wills continue to be available on the OASIS web site.

It is certainly not my wish to suggest that any TC close prematurely. If you wish to keep the TC active, please let me know. However, if you think the work is completed, perhaps it is time for it to close.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like to talk about this further.
