OK for now I just commented the following last line in htlatex:

        t4ht -f/$1 $4 ## -d~/WWW/temp/ -m644

I don't know what it was supposed to do but t4ht seems
broken on my system:

#!/bin/sh
        $1 $2
        $1 $2
        $1 $2
        tex4ht $2
        t4ht $2  $3

which makes it recursively re-invoke itself apparently forever.
