Subject: A message from candidate Ron Lake

Voters,

Below is a message from Board of Directors candidate Ron Lake.  He asks that you consider this message in determining your vote in the Board of Directors Special Election, which closes Friday 11 February.  Anyone who has already cast their vote can change their vote until the ballot closes.

Scott…

  • I represent a smaller company.  This means we have a different viewpoint (often) and can more readily represent the interests of the many smaller companies which are important members of OASIS.
  • I come from the geo-spatial world.  This is important since the geo-spatial world has actively embraced, utilized and pushed (in some cases to the breaking point) OASIS specifications including ebRIM, SAML, XACML, BPEL and UDDI.  Geo-spatial specifications are also important for OASIS specifications such as CAP, and I anticipate many other application related specifications in the future.
  • I have been a life long leader in the standards world.  I received the OGC Gardells gold medal for the creation of GML (Geography Markup Language) which involved not only technical innovation but also a great deal of horse trading, compromise and co-operation.  I have learned how to lead not only by action, but also by allowing others to contribute and do their thing.
  • I understand the need for standards bodies to work with one another - to build on one another's standards - to build a network of specifications that support the IT community of the future.  I can help OASIS, W3C, IETF, OGC work better together.
  • I understand specifications at the technical level and have been instrumental in seeing standards implemented in practice.  Our organization is small and hence the link between standards and real world implementation is short and sometimes sweet.
  • I offer an international perspective that it is sensitive to the key role of the US IT industry in global information systems.
  • OASIS is already well served by people with expertise in intellectual property law and regulations.
  • I have more than thirty years experience in advanced information systems covering a wide range of application topics including simulation, real time control, embedded systems, data acquisition, data base and transactional systems, geographic information systems, imaging systems, business and technical graphics, automated code generation, and artifical intelligence.
