-- Information about the Candidate OASIS Standard and the XLIFF TC --

The XML Localisation Interchange File Format (XLIFF) is a vocabulary designed to store localizable data and carry it from one step of a localization process to the other, while allowing interoperability between and among tools.

Using proprietary or non-standard formats in localization projects force either the source provider or the service provider to implement costly, inefficient pre-processing of localisable content. For publishers with many formats to handle, this becomes a major hurdle to localizing software.

XLIFF addresses this problem by defining a standard, extensible vocabulary that captures relevant metadata for any point in the lifecycle so that it can then be exchanged between a variety of commercial and open-source tools. The specifications are tool-neutral, support the entire localization process, and support common software and document data formats and mark-up languages.

XLIFF is implemented and supported by a broad, international community that has developed a number of tools to support the standard including a test suite, an online validator, and an open source Java Library to create, write, read and manipulate XLIFF 2.0 documents.

XLIFF V2.0 received five Statements of Use referring to seven independent implementations from ENLASO Corporation, Bryan Schnabel, Localisation Research Centre, CNGL, and Moravia

TC Description:

Advancing a multi-lingual data exchange standard for localisation, the XLIFF TC has developed XLIFF Version 2.0 as the successor to XLIFF Version 1.2, approved as an OASIS Standard in February of 2008. The 2.0 public review release contains a core specification along with 8 modules with advanced data and metadata exchange functionality in various areas such as translation candidates, size restrictions, formatting preview etc.
