Subject: RE: Issue 055 - DPWS - update to latest version of WS-Addressingand impact on ServiceID
I took an AI to construct some
text that describes ServiceId. This text has no normative
impact and is fairly long, so I recommend we add to the whitepaper. ServiceId allows a device to
associate long-lived URIs with specific services even as their Endpoint
References change to reflect physical transport changes (i.e., new IP
addresses, paths, or DNS names). This is particularly important when a
device has multiple services of the same type (e.g., a black-and-white printer
and color printer that both expose the printer service): ServiceId allows a
client to identify a single service with which it has application-layer
association, and later distinguish that service from others even though the
Endpoint References for all of the services have changed. ServiceIds are only constrained to
be URIs, so the device manufacturer is free to select any URI that makes sense
for their application: the URI may contain UUIDs, it may include serial
numbers, or it may be a URL. In all cases, the client should treat these
as opaque strings and should only store the value and later perform simple
string comparisons to evaluate equality. From: Ram Jeyaraman

discussions on this issue, please refer to this issue number or use this
thread. From: Alain Regnier
[mailto:alain@ricoh-tech.com] Please defer discussions on this issue until a time this
issue is accepted and is assigned a number. Description: The specification should be updated to refer to the latest
version of WS-Addressing. In the latest version of WS-Addressing ReferenceProperties
have been removed. How does that really affect ServiceID? How is ServiceID still useful without being inside the
EndPointReference? If it is still useful, it would be interesting to clarify
how, in the specification or inside a scenario. Proposed Resolution: Discuss and give example in the specification. |
