Subject: RE: [ws-i-ms] Re: WS-I Steering Committee nominations open

Scott,

I’ve already notified Jim that I want to add this to the Board Meeting Agenda next week. My intent will be to get it designated as an Action Item, so that it is taken up by the appropriate Committee. I don’t consider the Process Committee to be the “appropriate” Committee; although at this time the Member Section Policy is their jurisdiction.

Mike

Mike,

this extension is in the policy approved by the board.  It was intended to compress the total time of elections by allowing for 2 nomination periods, but only one ballot period - where the old policy required 2 nominations and 2 ballots.  It was also intended to encourage member participation.

That said, now that we are closing in on 2 years of activity under this policy we are analyzing all the elections to see if this particular part of the policy has served the members' benefit.  I hear your opinion clearly on the subject, and anecdotally, I'd bet you are right - it could well be a waste of time.

After I tabulate all the elections I'll be reporting the result to the board and if we are right in our personal assessments, we'll have the data to encourage a policy change in the direction of simplicity!

Thanks for your interest in making things better.

Scott,

This automatic extension of the nomination period is nonsense and a waste of everyone’s time. (Especially yours!).

What has to be done to change this in the future?

Nomination correction and update:

Previous emails incorrectly reported five seats available for nomination  On 2/26/2013 The Steering Committee voted to reduce the size of the Steering Committee to eight seats, making four seats available for this nomination period.

Nominations closed yesterday with all four expiring SC members seeking reelection.  The Member Section Policy requires extending nominations one time when nominations do not create a contested ballot.  Therefore nomination will be extended until 28 January to accommodate any other members who wish to join the process.

the nomination process is described below.

The Steering committee ballot will open on 29 January without further delay.

Any WS-I MS participant may make nominations to the Steering
Committee. However, only Member Section Members may be a candidate and
nominees employed by organizations already represented on the WS-I
Steering Committee are not eligible.

If you aren't currently active in the WS-I Member Section [2], now is
a great time to join. The
process to join is simple but it must be completed during the
nomination period. Send an email to member-services@oasis-open.org
stating your intent to join the WS-I MS.

NOMINATION & ELECTION SCHEDULE

Nominations will be held 30 December - 14 January 2014

The election will be held 15 January - 29 January 2014

Both the Nomination and Election periods may be extended in order to
afford the broadest participation on the process.  The details may be
found in Section 5.5 of the Member Section Policy [3].

  NOMINATION PROCESS

Any WS-I MS participant may nominate a candidate via email
to:nominations@oasis-open.org; please state WS-I SC nomination' in the

Prior to being confirmed as a candidate, each nominee must:

2. Confirm his/her ability to meet the time commitments of the
position (participation in a one hour teleconference each month,

Committee; and

Qualified Electors, in a closed ballot. The ballot tabulation process
and quorum requirements are detailed in Section 5.5 of the Member
Section Policy [3].

Results will be announced immediately after they are tabulated and
confirmed. Each WS-I MS Supporting Entity has one Qualified Elector
who casts the single vote on behalf of his/her organization. Unless
otherwise designated, the organization's Primary Representative serves
as the Qualified Elector. The Primary Representative may defer the
voting member role to another employee member by sending an email to
member-services@oasis-open.org; any such change should be in place
before the ballot is cast.

defined by the OASIS Member Section Policy [3] and the WS-I Member
Section Rules of Procedure [4].

We encourage all WS-I MS participants to consider serving on the
Steering Committee. Please contact (member-services@oasis-open.org)
