Subject: Getting good HTML before CS
I’ve been using Word in the SX TC and it’s been
pretty easy to get good HTML output. To meet the OASIS XHTML requirement I’ve
just run Tidy over the generated output and it’s been fine. The
conversion itself hasn’t lost formatting or broken links. It looks pretty
much like the spec in DOC or PDF format minus the page breaks. So to see if we could use Word I tried the new ODF importer on
the specs we approved today and it looks like it did a pretty good job. The immediately
visible problems I see are that the format of the TOC was lost, the line
numbers have changed and some of the embedded images were dropped. On the whole
though the formatting looks consistent with what we have now. For example the
XML examples still look good as does the use of Courier
for element names in the text. Some things are improved, the Appendixes
in the TOC are all now links for example. On the whole I think this would be a pretty minor cleanup
vs. editing the current HTML by hand. I’ve attached the Doc formats of the specs with the
PDF and HTML generated output. No further post-processing was done on these,
e.g. I didn’t run Tidy. The importer saved the change bars but I accepted
all of them since the docs were approved today. So in the attached there are no
changes tacked. For completeness here is what the tool reported as potential
issues for each of the specs.
