Aha, thanks for posting that; it makes sense to me.  As a would-be 
(wannabe?) intermediary I find that pretty compelling. :)

A request for one minor tweak on your (et al.) proposal:  can we change 
"?id=" to fragment notation, "#" ?  That way it follows the convention 
used by XML DSIG and XML Encryption, XKMS, and others, for their base 
URI's.
