Let's make sure that we do not confuse portability and interoperability. 

- We should have interoperability out of the box through Web 
  service interfaces (although WS-RM and WS-TX will make things a little
  more complicated.

- Portability is as much an knowledge issue than an code issue. We should 
  be realistic and not shoot for 100% code portability right away. SQL
  is a good cases study of what we could be shooting for.
