Background information about WS-I BP1.0 recommendations on use of WSDL1.1
Hi all,
Attached please find a
set of slides which provide a summary and some details about the BP1.0
recommendations on the use of WSDL1.1.
After a preliminary
analysis on these BP1.0 recommendations, I feel that we should adopt WS-BP1.0
for BPEL. Below are my observations:
- BP1.0 provides many
valuable clarifications on use of WSDL1.1. These clarifications should be
reflected in all WSDL examples in BPEL spec
- The following BP1.0
constraints affect portType definitions and should be considered for BPEL
n XML1.0 is mandated for WSDL definitions - OK, that's the status
quo.
n XML schema is the only conformant type system - OK, I believe
that's also the status quo. BPEL only use XSD for data type definition
n Disallow operation overloading - operation name must be unique
within a portType - should be enforced. I don't see anything in BPEL relies on
this
n Disallow out-bound operations - OK, that's the status quo
- The following
constraints are for bindings, there is no direct conflict with BPEL
n SOAP over HTTP is the only conformant binding -OK, we only provide
conformant portType definition, bindings are up to the services implementers.
n Disallows (soap) encoding - OK, same as above

What to do with WS-I BP1.0?
This issue has been added to the wsbpel issue list.
The issues list is posted as a Technical Committee document to the OASIS WSBPEL TC
pages on a regular basis. The current edition, as a TC document, is the
most recent document with the title in the "Issues" folder of the WSBPEL
TC document list - the next posting will include this issue. The list
editor's working copy, which will normally include an issue when it is
announced, is available at this
constant URL.
Issue - 72 - What to do with WS-I BP1.0?
Status:
open
Date added: 1 Oct 2003
Submitter: Liu, Kevin
Date submitted: 01 October 2003
Document: Specification
Description: WS-I BP1.0 provides
clarifications and constraints on the use of WSDL1.1. We need to investigate
and decide if BPEL should be aligned with BP1.0. In particular, a few questions
need to be answered:
1. Would
BP 1.0 be restricting BPEL to the point that some of BPEL's functionality would
not be available?
2. Would
the fact that BP 1.0 only addresses the SOAP/HTTP binding imply that also BPEL
should be limited to that type of binding?
3. Should
a BPEL process be offered as a Web service that is BP 1.0 compliant?
4. Would
it be fair to limit BPEL use to interacting with BP 1.0 compliant Web services
only?
