Subject: comments on the spec

I thought it might be a good idea to
recap the discussion we had about what to do with comments on the spec.
We will use the action items on the BPEL TC web site as a light weight
process to keep track of straightforward editorial fixes. In particular,
there is no email thread linked to an action item, and the spec editing
team will handle them directly (ie, there won't be discussion on the TC
calls). If there are questions or concerns about the suggested action
among the editing team, the originator will be contacted. If there
is any doubt that the action item involves a substantive change, the originator
will be asked to consider opening an issue. Anyone on the TC can
open an action item and they are visible to all. The editing team
email archives are also open to all if you are interested in viewing progress.
And, as always, membership in the editing team is available to all
members who wish to share the workload.
Some considerations:
- Use the action item list for trivial
points, spelling or grammar fixes, error in applying a resolution, duplication
of content, clarifications where the intent is clear, etc. Please
start the description with the words "Editing team" and use your
name as the owner - the editing team will update it once assigned.
- An issue should be opened for (examples):
- A clarification where the intent of
the spec can be interpreted in more than one way so the decision on the
correct interpretation is be made by the TC.
- An action item that is likely to cause
discussion, raise other questions, etc, so that the link to an email
thread is captured.
- As we saw today the decision that something
should be rephrased can be controversial. This is a judgement call
- if you are undecided, I'd suggest starting with an action item. If
there isn't agreement on the spec editing team, they will suggest an issue
be opened.
- The issue process can be fast and simple.
- This is the best path to make sure a
question gets considered by the full TC. Even If we decide not to
open an issue, the issue list will capture any email and this may be useful
to someone in the future wondering about the same point. (Please
remember to follow the issue conventions of sending a request to open an
issue directly to Peter and I, and of using "Issue xxx - " as
first words in the subject.)
- Where ever possible, include a proposed
resolution in the issue description so we can move quickly.
Regards, Diane
