Hello,
I just spoke with the folks from DMTF and EMC regarding the OASIS InterOp
opportunities at EMW. ComputerWorld and DMTF have been kind enough to offer
to explain all of our options in a concall which I hope to schedule for
next Wednesday at 2:00EST, 11:00PST in greater detail than I was able to
offer on Thursday. I’d like to invite you to engage your marketing contact
as well because ComputerWorld has identified a target audience for this
event. It is REALLY important that you make an effort to attend if you
are interested because I believe that they are in the best position to
describe the potential options. If this is not convenient for you and you
are seriously considering participation, please let me know.
Thanks to everyone involved!
Dee

If OASIS needs/wants to showcase the standard in its fullest form, then
OASIS should revisit the plan to deliver a presentation in the track and
showcase the technology/standard in the expo hall. If money was not
an issue, OASIS would already have taken this path.
Trying to squeeze a demo into a presentation track is doable and has some
downsides for time, space, time to comprehend, all participants receiving
credit, etc.... but one of the upsides is you save some money. If
you holistically look at costs - people, equipment, travel, etc....
the cost of the expo hall space is most likely less than 10% of all the
costs.
We'll talk more at 4:30 today.

Well, I've done quit a few of these now and 50 minutes is a concern. I'm
not concerned about an OASIS spot; I am concerned that my TC has adequate
time, space, logistical support to showcase the Standard, as I assume your
attendee would prefer. So, hopefully my chairs will be available too, Heather/Winston?
Will someone that is in charge of logistic be on as well?
Thanks for your time in advance!

Dee,
I'm available at 4.30PM.
It would be helpful to understand what confusion there is ahead of time,
so we can get on and off quickly.
Keep in mind, worst case if OASIS does not do a demo, OASIS is still awarded
a presentation slot on Wednesday.

I will set up the call, if each person can please indicate availability
that would be keen.

Subject: RE: OASIS InterOp at EMW
Hi Dee,
Some details on the tracks.
The Alliance Partner DMTF track is on Wednesday afternoon.
There will be 4 parallel tracks running that day: 1 for enduser case studies,
2 for vendor described solutions; 1 for Alliance Partners. The Alliance
Partner sessions will be 50 minutes in length. There will be 4 sessions
in a row. The other 3 sessions include SNIA for SMI-S, a session on the
industry segment working on WS-Mgt, and a EGA on Utility Computing.
The rooms will be setup for 50-75 people.
There will be a projector (to hookup to a laptop) and a screen.
There will be no special power or network setups in the room.
If there is to be a demonstration, it would need to be physically setup
before the track starts and taken apart after the track ends. There
will not be an oppty to setup the demo Tuesday and debug it.
Given there will be 4 tracks in parallel, the attendance can not be predicted;
e.g., are all sessions equal in attendance or does one pull more than others.
If the demo goes into the track, the entitlement list in the demo contract
do not apply. The visibility created for the demo will only be in the context
of the description of the track by the event producers. Over a period
of 3 days, there will be about 50 track sessions, we need to treat all
fairly. OASIS and the participants are encouraged to do their own
marketing awareness activities, given their other levels of participation
in the event. OASIS may consider issuing a press release or have flyers
in the vendor booths.
Since 99% of the tracks will most likely be single presenter and slide
presentations, any/all logistical needs for the track need to be planned
out and clearly communicated to the EMW planning team between now and the
end of August. In September before the event and onsite, special requirements
will be handled on an exception basis, based on the priority of all activities
taking place and may not be accommodated in a timely manner or at all.
Your preplanning will be a proportional to the smoothness
and execution at EMW: space, power, equipment configuration, sequence of
presenters, slide deck laptop being able to project demo screens, and so
on. Some of the logistical requests will have to be
thought out and confirmed by the EMW team, before being assumed to be available
and supportable.

Importance: High
Hi Wayne,
I participated in a meeting today with the OASIS WSDM TC; we are really
excited about the possibility of organizing a Web Services Distributed
Management InterOp Demo at EMC, we just need to nail down our options.
After discussing the options, it really looks as if option #3 is
best suited for our purposes. We have done a similar arrangement and we
have been met with a great response from the end-user community seeking
answers to technical enterprise-wide problems.
Can you tell me if this works for you? To date, we have 4 large vendors
that have committed and I am hopeful that more will follow as we firm up
this commitment. Can you tell me more about the track; time amount, space,
other tandem tracks, etc?
I will begin a short leave of absence at the end of next week, so I'd like
to have resolution by them.
We have some early passes at a scenario, would that help?
Thanks!

Subject: RE: OASIS InterOp at EMW
Hi Dee,
A lot of discussion has taken place inside of the DMTF and with our event
co-producer and partner Computerworld. Leo Leger from Computerworld will
be speaking to you next week to cover some creative options. Given the
DMTF is also resource constrained, we are not in a position to fund space
for the OASIS, a model we provided some Alliance Partners in 2004.
Based upon how our sponsors are lining up, the idea of having a demo in
each of the OASIS sponsor booth's could be an option. In your email, you
indicate there are 5-6 likely vendors. www.emwusa.com
lists our current signed list of sponsors. Is there 100% match to the 5-6
vendors that would be in the OASIS demo.
The options the DMTF discussed were; each have their pros and cons for
cost, visibility, and audience reach:
1) OASIS funds booth space and spreads costs back to the 5-6 companies
participating in the demo
2) By circumstance, there is 100% match of existing EMW sponsors with the
vendors wanting to deliver an OASIS demo. Each vendor then puts their part
of the demo in their exhibit area. A network is run between the sponsor
booths.
3) The demonstration is delivered in the OASIS WSDM Tutorial Track, currently
being planned for Wednesday afternoon.
Leo Leger from Computerworld will be coming up with some out of the box
ideas, such as if there is not 100% match of sponsors and planned vendors
in the demo, that OASIS can be granted a demonstration area if members
of the demo can become sponsors. I'll defer to Leo to cover a few
more options.
In summary, the DMTF does want to promote its Alliance Partners who can
support the DMTF at EMW, and make EMW even more attractive for endusers
to attend. Other Alliance Partners planning to support DMTF in sessions
and or exhibits include SNIA, EGA, and NAC.
Lets touch base later this coming week to see what options we can make
work, assuming Leo Leger and you have talked .
Best regards
Wayne

Hi Karen,
We have never been required to pay for a space for an OASIS InterOp Demonstration,
we are happy to pay for connectivity. As other organizers are anxious to
bring these types of demonstrations to attendees as they are presented
by a neutral standards organization. We charge each participant a flat
fee of less than you are charging here for logistical support, printing,
promotional work and materials, etc. A demo table is not an option,
as I don't imagine it would accommodate 5-6 vendors with laptops, screen,
projector, etc. adequate space for a demo, do you? Also, we are not in
a position to finance a booth as we typically organize these InterOps at
a loss to OASIS.
Can we make other arrangements? I need to know quickly as I need to investigate
other options.
Regards,
Dee

Hi Dee: It took me a little longer than expected to get back to you
with the finalized information regarding the Enterprise Management World
Technology Demo, but I think the attached information and this email will
at least give you a place to start. Mark Carlson is the DMTF point
person for demos at EMW, however he is out traveling so we wanted to share
the latest info with you (specific details are in the attached contract)
so that you would have something to review and/or reference.
As background, rather than have a separate area for the demos, EMW demonstrations
will be run in and between vendor/sponsor booths. Sponsors can then choose
to have an additional featured table promoting their demo participation,
or just promote it within their booth (costs for each option are detailed
in the attached). The benefit of a table is that it provides a focal point
for demonstration-related marketing, separate from the more sales-oriented
activities that may be taking place in the booths.
While Mark is the overall point person, he has been working to find technical
"team leaders" for each demo. Do you think a demo organizer/leader
could be found within OASIS for the Web Services for Distributed Management
Interoperability Demonstration? Or would that person be you? From
your initial email, it sounds like you already have 5 vendors that are
interested in participating, which is a great! We look forward to
participation by OASIS.
Hopefully this provides you with the basics you need to start a discussion
within OASIS, but just let us know if you have any questions and we'll
certainly do our best to answer them (until Mark returns). Our hope is
to have all the demo participants' contracts in place by July 31.
Thanks,
Karen

Hi Dee: On behalf of the DMTF, I would like to apologize for the
delayed response; your email/request was just brought to our attention
this morning. We are in the process of finalizing some of the finite
details regarding the EMW Technology Demonstration, however I will be forwarding
you an information sheet/contract in the next day or so that should answer
a majority of your initial questions and give you a place to start in regards
to planning. Again, thank you for your patience and we look forward
to OASIS' participation at EMW.
I'll be in touch in the next day or so.
Thanks,
Karen

Hi Nancy,
I just left you a message regarding OASIS, http://www.oasis-open.org/home/index.php,
presenting a Web Services for Distributed Management Interoperability Demonstration
with at least 5 vendors participating in the demo at the EMW conference,
http://www.emwusa.com/index.html.
OASIS InterOp demos have been very popular at Gartner, Burton Catalyst,
RSA Security, etc. I think your venue is a nice fit for this TC but it
takes a fair amount of heavy lifting by the participants to orchestrate
a successful demonstration and we would need a great deal of support from
you as well. Does this sound like something that you would be interested
in pursuing for EMW? If so, please contact me soon to discuss.
Best regards,
Dee Schur
