Note that you cannot guarantee that render is called after an action 
(e.g. a portlet may create an error and the portal decideds to redirect 
to an error page), so you programming logic cannot count on receiving 
what was put into this property scope. That is why its usefulness is 
very restricted to me.

So basically this is a per request cache for portlets, right?

I thing we should not make this distinction between nav state on a page 
or cross pages. The portlet should not care how this is implemented by 
the consumer and should always store its view state as nav state.

Wouldn't these use cases be also covered by render events that we 
postponed for V3?
