Hi all,

At last week's F2F there was significant discussion regarding the specification of functions and predicates in XACML.  One approach specifies the various type restrictions and compatibilities in English language; see, for example, Table 2 in Section 5.3.2 of the current v0.14 version of the specification.  The other approach specifies this information in XML schema; see, for example, Simon's proposal below.  The first approach leads to a more compact XACML specification, but requires extra (Java, C, whatever) code to implement the type restrictions and conversions.  The second approach leads to a larger XACML specification (or perhaps a main specification and a companion specification), but an off-the-shelf schema validator will be able to catch any typing problems at policy creation time.

We need to choose one approach or the other.  It was decided on today's schema subcommittee call to choose the approach by the next schema subcommittee call (Monday, July 1st).  So, this e-mail calls for list discussion of this topic.  Please acquaint yourself with the issues and implications and state your preferred approach by the end of this week so that v0.15 (due out early next week) can reflect TC consensus.
