REGRETS

Bill Barnhill

1) XDI RDF METAGRAPH MODEL DISCUSSION

Drummond and Giovanni discussed the XDI metagraph model. Giovanni stated that he now understands that some of his suggestions over the past few weeks are based in a different view of an XDI metamodel, and that he would like to propose a different XDI metamodel.

Drummond welcomed Giovanni to make such a proposal, although he has reservations about how it may slow down the XDI 1.0 specification process. Drummond will send an articulation of his concerns to the list as soon as he has time to write them up.

2) $HAS SEMANTICS CONTINUED

Giovanni and Drummond continue the thread from recent calls. See:

      http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/xdi/201001/msg00065.html

In particular Giovanni wanted to discuss Drummond’s recent suggestion of the following XDI statement for the corresponding English natural language statement:

            Bill's cars                         (=bill/+car/$$)  <-- identifies the

collection of all instances of the object -->

Giovanni pointed out that the XDI statement…

            =bill/+car/+fiatCinquecento

…is a statement saying that Bill owns a car (a "fiat cinquecento"). And the XDI statement…

            (=bill/+car/+fiatCinquecento)

…is a reification of that statement. So it lends itself to statements like the following:

            (=bill/+car/+fiatCinquecento)/$is$a/+trueStatement

…in which we are stating something about the reified statement. So the statement…

            (=bill/+car/$$)

…is the reification of the statment "bill has *any* car", but does not identify the set of cars that bill owns.

Drummond agreed, and said that his suggestion is not a good solution for that reason. He has done some further thinking about how, in the current metamodel, one would express the difference between three statements in English: #1: Bill's car, #2: Bill's cars, and #3: Bill car, but has not had time to send a writeup to the list yet.

Giovanni asked if Drummond could provide a description of the precise semantics of these three statements in English. Drummond agreed it is very important in these conversations to be very accurate about how natural language semantics are being modelled with computer language semantics, so he has the action item to do this.

# DRUMMOND to send the above to the list.

Drummond and Giovanni agreed that it would be best to: a) start a wiki page where we can document this, and b) state which subset of natural language statements we aim to support in XDI 1.0.

3) NEXT CALL

The next call is next week at the regular time.
