Subject: XDI JSON serialization format - another proposal

XDI TC Members and Observers,

This is my first post to the list since the XDI Retreat at Whistler two weeks ago. I (and others who attended the retreat) have numerous action items to write up different portions of it, but I have been on travel or at conferences since the retreat ended (Privacy Identity Innovation 2010 in Seattle followed by VRM+CRM in Boston last week).

However in one area -- the JSON serialization format that we spent 1.5 days on at the retreat -- there has been  constant work and discussion since the retreat ended. Not just because we need to lock in on it, but because it reveals so much about the graph model and metagraph semantics.

I suggest we make that a major focus on this week's XDI TC telecon. In the meantime, however, I wanted to alert you that another proposal has been posted on the JSON Format wiki page (http://wiki.oasis-open.org/xdi/JsonFormat). See http://wiki.oasis-open.org/xdi/JsonFormat#Monday.2C2010-08-309.3A40PMPT.28fromDrummond.29.28XDISupertypeModel.29.

Although this may not be the final proposal (because it is more verbose than other proposals), nonetheless I strongly encourage you to review it to understand what it reveals about the underlying semantics of the graph model, specifically the three XDI supertypes it proposes (which have been there all along but which we're just now recognizing the semantics for). I discussed this with Bill this morning and he agrees it is something we should explore in more detail.

In any case, I'm curious to get the reaction of the JSON developers on the TC to this proposal, and whether it will increase or decrease processing time for common graph operations.

Lastly, it's been proposed that we need a 2-hour XDI TC telecon this coming Thursday for those who can make it since we have so much to talk about. So plan on a call from 1PM to 3PM Pacific Time this Thursday on the regular bridge number (see below).

I'll send out a more detailed agenda before the call.

Best,

=Drummond
