Subject: Re: [xdi] crossref.org / xdi in libraries?

Looks interesting. I think it may have come up here on this list before.

I think it is similar to XDI identifiers, but..
- More specialized (for web links, for the research community, ...). Not as generic as XDI.
- With fewer semantics built into the identifiers. E.g. in XDI identifiers, you can tell from the syntax whether you are referring to an "entity", "attribute", "person", "organization", etc.

Crossref doesn't look like XDI link contract at all to me. Link contracts are about permissioning and data transfer, not about identification.

I came across this initiative and it made me think of XDI. Perhaps a similar or complimentary architecture and/or ideal scenario for use cases in the publishing/libraries sector...

http://crossref.org

This is a unique naming system for scholarly publishing, centred on a 'DOI' - Digital Object Identifier:

"The DOI serves as a persistent, actionable identifier for intellectual property online."

Ie sounds like link contracts..
