Subject: RE: [xliff-comment] ITS 2.0 support in XLIFF 2.0

Dear Des,

Once ITS 2.0 is finished, it could be proposed for adoption as a module in XLIFF 2.0. If it is considered appropriate, the XLIFF TC may adopt it.

Subject: [xliff-comment] ITS 2.0 support in XLIFF 2.0

Dear XLIFF TC members,

While attending the MultilingualWeb-LT Requirements gathering workshop held in Dublin Ireland this week, it became evident that the current proposal for XLIFF 2.0 extensibility would prevent the use of the proposed ITS 2.0 metadata which is in the early stages of development (http://www.w3.org/TR/its2req/)

ITS2.0 aims to allow full round tripping of relevant metadata across the Authoring, Translation and Publishing domains, and as such could help reduce barriers to translating and publishing of global content.  XLIFF is the key interchange technology in the translation process, therefore if ITS2.0 is to be successful in its goals; it needs to be available in XLIFF.

As an implementer of workflows using a wide range of translation and other technologies, I have encountered several pain points related to extensibility implementations of the current XLIFF standard in the past, so I am not necessarily advocating full extensibility in XLIFF 2.0. However since the two technologies are so closely linked,  it would make sense to me that ITS2.0 is supported by future iterations of XLIFF – Either by some form of restricted namespace, or other such constrained form of limited extensibility.  In my opinion, the degree of success of both standards, particularly ITS2.0, may be dependent on it.

Thanks for your attention in this important matter.
