FAQ: Size of XLIFF files

Please find below an FAQ which I have compiled from input of the XLIFF TC,

FAQ: Size of XLIFF files 

It's difficult to tell what file size can be easily handled by
translation-related tools such as editors. Various dimensions come into
play:

- environment (eg. Operating System)    

        tools running under Windows behave different from tools running
under Unix 

- architecture of the tool 

        tools doing in-memory processing behave different from tools which
have a database management system in the background

- complexity of the data 

        XML with deep nesting/complex markup is treated differently than
simple XML 

Nevertheless, here are a couple of rules of thumb related to TM tools 

- only some support XLIFF 
- XLIFF compliance/coverage differs 
- pushing file size beyond 3 MB (should correspond to approx. 10.000
source-target segments) does not seem to be a good idea
