Subject: RE: [xri] Interesting TAG thread on composable URIs
Wow. This strikes me as an extraordinarily strong opinion, especially if it would exclude XPointer. I'm eager to understand his thinking, since cross-references are at the core of XRI architecture. =Drummond -----Original Message----- From: Dave McAlpin [mailto:dave.mcalpin@epokinc.com] Sent: Thursday, July 10, 2003 11:22 AM To: gwachob@visa.com; xri@lists.oasis-open.org Subject: RE: [xri] Interesting TAG thread on composable URIs See also http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-xml-linking-comments/2002OctDec/ 0039 .html for his comments on XPointer, which like XRIs introduces some novel syntax and makes use of balanced parens. Someone asked if his statement that "there is no situation or context in which it is appropriate for balanced parentheses to appear as a suggested URI syntax" meant that XPointer should never be used. His answer was simply, "Yes." Specifically, Roy Fielding (at http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-tag/2003Jul/0013.html) says: " >>http://www.foo.com/bar/baz.jar#jar(/COM/foo/Quux.xml#foo) There is no situation or context in which it is appropriate for balanced parentheses to appear as a suggested URI syntax. It is the wrong choice in all circumstances. Since this example is an http URI, it can easily be http://www.foo.com/bar/baz.jar/COM/foo/Quux.xml#foo " A bunch more interesting opinions in that thread. Its clear Roy Fielding will have issues with XRI. :-) -Gabe You may leave a Technical Committee at any time by visiting http://www.oasis-open.org/apps/org/workgroup/xri/members/leave_workgroup .php You may leave a Technical Committee at any time by visiting http://www.oasis-open.org/apps/org/workgroup/xri/members/leave_workgroup .php
