Yes, I agree with Gabe, an emtpy subsegment should be valid and should resolve (though the authority may choose to say it does not have a corresponding resolution value). I'd point out that the current XDI addressing proposal has an explicit definition for what an empty segment should resolve to in an XDI context.

No, the empty string is as valid as any other string...  I think it even works with the current wording of the resolution spec. If it doesn't, I think it should.

I don't think they are the same and I don't think they should resolve to the same thing.. I think empty subsegments are a useful concept.
