Subject: Minutes:Joint XRI & XDI TC Telecon 10AM PT Thursday 2007-11-15
Following are the minutes of a joint unofficial telecon of the XRI and XDI TCs at: Date: Thursday, 15 November 2007 USA Time: 10:00AM - 12:00PM Pacific Time Event Description: Weekly unofficial joint call of the XRI and XDI Technical Committees. ATTENDING Les Chasen Wil Tan Victor Grey Markus Sabadello Drummond Reed Marty Schleiff John Bradley Gabe Wachob REGRETS Kermit Snelson GUESTS Abbie Barbir, Nortel Dee Schur, OASIS AGENDA 1) DISCUSSION ABOUT JOINING THE OASIS ID-TRUST MEMBER SECTION The XRI TC has been invited to join the ID-Trust Member Section. More info about it is at: http://oasis-idtrust.org/ ID-Trust MS Steering Committee member Abbie Barbir of Nortel and OASIS ID-Trust Coordinator Dee Schur joined us to explain more about this opportunity and answer questions from TC members. Following are notes on the discussion: * ID-Trust Member Section used to be the PKI Member Section * Currently has the EKI, DKMI, DSS TCs -- all PKI-related. * The ID-Trust Member Section is currently actively involved in pursuing two new TCs (besides the XRI TC) that will broaden the scope even more. * Member Sections have their own self-governance. * The TC joining a Member Section and members of the TC joining a Member Section are separate. Each makes their own election. A Member joins a Member Section by their primary representative electing to join the Member Section. * Members of a TC are encouraged to join a Member Section because once they do, a portion of their dues (currently 35%) goes to the Member Section. * These funds can go towards promotion, interop events, etc. * The biggest benefit will be in helping adoption. Abbie believes we have built a strong foundation and that there is much that can be built on it as we grow the adoption curve. * The more attraction that the ID-Trust Member Section draws, the better for us as a TC to be a member. A recent example was the ID-Trust-sponsored workshop at Catalyst Europe in Barcelona. * The mechanics of the TC joining are simple to hold a vote. If the vote is positive, the Member Section Steering Committee votes to approve the membership. Then TC becomes represented on the Member Section page. * The Member Section is developing an online focus area in which we can participate. * There are not regular meetings of a Member Section, however the Steering Committee meets regularly. * The Steering Committee helps chairs of member TCs with feedback, promotion, etc. * Steering Committee members are on staggered terms (the next election is in April). Once the TC joins, it opens an avenue for discussion with the Steering Committee members. * If the Member Section has an event, it provides an opportunity for different TC members to attend, promote their work, interact, etc. * TC members also have the opportunity to run for the Steering Committee. * The upcoming NIST event would be the first opportunity to do a presentation about our work. * Abbie and Dee will be attending IIW. * A large security event is planned for London next fall. # DEE will send information about a ballot to the TC list. After Abbie and Dee left the call, the TC members discussed the following points. * The concern that some TC members have had that this might cause XRI to be associated with PKI has largely abated given the other TCs that ID-Trust is trying to attract and the benefits of membership. * The main benefit is the exposure, and the fact that the ID-Trust Member Section is building lots of momentum. * John made the point that when it comes to XDI, the relationship with PKI will be a good thing. * Marty feels that affiliating with PKI infrastructure is not a bad thing because many enterprises need and use it. * Drummond believes the timing is good as it will help amplify interest in XRI Resolution 2.0 and the public review and OASIS Standard vote cycle. The consensus of the members on the call was that we should proceed to a vote concurrent with the XRI Resolution 2.0 vote. # DRUMMOND will post the ballot. 2) REVIEW OF XRI RESOLUTION 2.0 WORKING DRAFT 11 RELEASE CANDIDATE 1 RC1 was uploaded on Wednesday night. The links are: PDF (this is the suggested version to open for the call): http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/download.php/26114/xri-resolution-v2.0- wd-11-rc1.pdf WORD: http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/download.php/26113/xri-resolution-v2.0- wd-11-rc1.doc All substantive changes are marked with comments (13 in total). All are limited to a few sentences except for the addition of one short section (5.4). On the telecon we walked through all 13 commented revisions and reviewed the wording (catching several typos). There was consensus on all of these after the slight corrections made on the call. Drummond thanked Kermit and John in particular for their close scrutiny of this draft and John's and Steve's persistence in making sure all aspects of the synonym and Redirect/Ref processing architecture were tightly documented. # DRUMMOND to post release candidate 2, with comments removed, in preparation for a vote. 3) COMMITTEE DRAFT 02 VOTE There was consensus we should schedule the Committee Draft vote starting Friday. The only question was whether it should run for the mimumum - 7 days -- or extend for 10 or 11 days so it goes beyond the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S. # DRUMMOND to check with Mary McRae about any effect this timing decision would make on commencing the public review by December 1, and to get wording of the Committee Draft and Public Review ballots. # DRUMMOND to post the ballots for both. 4) UPDATING THE WIKIPEDIA PAGE ON XRI We discussed that since the new spec non-normatively references the Wikipedia XRI page, TC members should make sure that relevant resources that spec readers may wish to find there (examples, additional documentation, open source projects, etc.) are posted. We will discuss this further on the next telecon. 5) PREPARATIONS FOR IIW Fall IIW is approaching fast: http://iiw.windley.com/wiki/Workshop_2007b The XRI and XDI TCs have been asked to prepare a one-pager for the introductory sections on Monday, December 3. # DRUMMOND to prepare a first draft. We also briefly discussed other sessions we might like to have, including a tutorial on XRI and an in-depth tech session on XRI Resolution 2.0. We will discuss that in more detail on our next telecon. 6) NEXT TELECON Due to the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S., and as a celebration of XRI Resolution 2.0 reaching final, we will not hold a telecon next week. Our next call will be at 10AM PT, Thursday, November 29. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe from this mail list, you must leave the OASIS TC that generates this mail.
