There's a well-known Austrian pop song called "A Mensch möcht i bleibn" by famous singer Wolfgang Ambros. It's difficult to translate, but it roughly goes like this:
"Human I want to remain,
not a number I wanna become,
and real humans I want to see,
because I am very much against building things just for robots,
and against just watching dumb TV..
etc."
This was written before I was born and is older than the web by almost two decades, but I have to think about it every time I see i-numbers or other numbers for identifying people :)

Seems to try to solve what XRI originally intended to.
It is a number only format. I do not know why people "like" long
numbers.
It has no authentication.
There is a similar discussion going on at the Japanese Government.
They also only talk about "numbers", and do not talk about
"authentication".
It is a great mystery to me why people think of "numbers" are the
silver bullet for solving identity problems.
