6. HIMSS InterOp

(6a) Guest speakers from HIMSS provided background on the HIMSS 2009 annual conference and exhibition.

Didi Davis, John Donnelly, and Lisa Spellman discussed scope and size of the conference.  This year the conference covers 15,000 sq feet and focuses on interoperability.  There are two theatres, introductory talks, educational presentations, and patient data exchange between exhibitors following a unifying storyline.  Event includes 51 connected vendors connecting 75 systems acting like the IT infrastructure of a small hospital passing patient information, radiology images, and documents.

Dee Schur and Jane Harnad of OASIS discussed joint interest with HIMSS.  Both organizations wish to show future direction of technology at the conference.

Tony Nadalin commented that his organization has paid to be in the interoperability showcase.  Tony asked how to limit additional expenses.  HIMSS representatives state certain level of HIMSS participants have access between interoperability showcase floor and their booths outside the showcase.

Suggestion made that TC Members paying to be within interoperability showcase may join remaining members in an OASIS booth via HIMSS network connection.  Companies paying portion of cost for joint booth would InterOp from outside the interoperability showcase.  The joint booth would be similar to the arrangement used to demonstrate the XACML portion of the XSPA profile at RSA 2007 Conference last April. HIMSS stated this was unusual but interesting and asked for a proposal on paper.

Lori described possibility of the XSPA demonstration being worked into the Emergency Responder storyline.  Participation would require Sept. 30 commitment.  HIMSS representative stated if not in this exchange, the commitment of the TC to be at the conference could be as late as the 10-12 of October.  Printed materials are created at that time.
