I've
encouraged a similar step with our techwriter, except they came from framemaker
which has a "structured mode" - which to me seemed like a good middle step from
going to WYSIWYG to structured to raw xml. Does pagemaker have such a
mode?
LN
Yes. I am totally
aware of that. I just want to make the transition from Adobe Pagemaker to a
Docbook editor as easy as possible for our editors. I know that I will need to
educate them a little, but when I say 'as if they were editing a word document'
I mean that I dont want them to have to interact wit raw XML source, and I want
the interface and overall user experience to be as friendly and clean as
possible. Moving our publishing system over to an automated Docbook workflow is
a big step for us and I do not want to scare our editors.

If these are your
requirements, I would say, forget about working with XML.
Writing a XML
document is not equal to working with Word. In XML you
must be aware of
where you are, and tell the editor what do you want to
write.
In fact, it
is good, because you must know what you want to say, and
then you make it
real.
But you can't just write letters and place bolds and italics, it is
much
more than this.
If you want word, then use word. But you can't use
XML and use it like
Word.
