Title: Re: [humanmarkup] PSB: posts
Is
referent in the primary schema? I remember it being part of the sign
experiment,
thus,
not something that has to be defined for the PSB. Am I
wrong?
A
referent in the sign experiment DTD element type I posted is a real world
instance of the thing signified. If the
sign signifies a curve in a road, a
real
curve on a real road can be a referent.
Sign -
mostly just a wrapper element for descriptive purposes in the
DTD,
an abstraction otherwise or the container. A sign may be
symbolic, iconic or indexical, sometimes combinations
of these.
Signifier - the sign, perhaps a glyph for example, the
wavy glyph on the road sign for Curves Ahead
Signified - the concept of the sign, eg,
curveness
Referent - a real instance of a sign, eg, a curve on a
real road.
Semiote: a processor capable of emitting and/or
producing signs. It may be
living
or artificial for purposes of this
specification.
