CONSORTIUM HEADLINES
--------------------

OASIS regrets to announce that a consortium member, Ed Felt of BEA
Systems, was tragically killed in the terrorist attack on United
Airlines flight 93 on 11 September. As a major contributor to the OASIS
Business Transactions Technical Committee, Ed's integrity, knowledge,
compassion and companionship will be sorely missed. We extend our
deepest sympathy to his family.

---------------
MEMBER BENEFITS
---------------

START AN OASIS TC

OASIS is unique among standards organizations in that our technical
agenda is driven by our members. Any group of three or more OASIS
members can form a technical committee (TC) to create specifications
related to the interoperability of structured information systems.

If you have an idea for technical work but haven't formed a complete
plan or mobilized support from others, we may be able to help. The OASIS
TC Process allows members to create an open discussion list in order to
gauge community interest and discuss charter and scope of a potential
TC.

In addition to new work, OASIS TCs can also be formed to take
existing work to the next level. Many current OASIS TCs, in fact, are
advancing technical work that began outside the Consortium. For example,
the OASIS Security Services TC has converged work from the AuthXML and
S2ML groups into a single SAML specification; by bringing this work to
OASIS, the two groups consolidated their efforts, eliminated overlap and
increased participation and acceptance for the final work result.

If you have an idea for technical work or if you're involved in
developing an XML specification -- either within your company or through
a vendor group or industry dot-org -- please contact me for more details
on how further development within OASIS might be beneficial.

OASIS SPONSORED STAFF MEETINGS

When a company becomes an OASIS Sponsor, all its employees--no
matter where they're located, what department they're in or what kind of
work they do--are eligible to participate in the Consortium. To help
Sponsors get maximum value out of their membership, we encourage you to
schedule an OASIS Sponsor Staff Briefing, a 30-minute presentation that
will educate your staff on XML interoperability, the work of OASIS and
unique marketing and PR benefits for OASIS Sponsors. Via conference call
or in person, members of the OASIS staff will provide briefings on:

- Why XML standards are necessary
- What technical work OASIS is doing now--and what's ahead
- How to get involved in existing OASIS technical work
- How to start new OASIS technical committees
- How to move existing standards efforts to OASIS and cut down on
multiple membership fees
- How you can take advantage of exclusive OASIS Sponsor PR and marketing
benefits

If you're a Sponsor member and would like to schedule an OASIS
Update, email karl.best@oasis-open.org.

UPDATE: ebXML and Vertical Industry Conferences

OASIS representative Dale Waldt spoke on XML and Distributed System
Integration Using ebXML at
two vertical industry conferences on September 12.

The first presentation was made to the International Financial Services
Association (IFSA), a non-technical banking and financial service
industry group.
Traditionally the Financial industry, as well as others, has depended on
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), and now they hope to utilize ebXML
for the next generation of interchange applications.

The second meeting was hosted by the Association For Enterprise
Integration (AFEI) whose goal is to advance enterprise integration and
e-business practices for industries and governments around the globe.
The audience was comprised mostly of members of the military logistics
and defense
manufacturing communities who have extensive experience in applying
structured information
standards to manage logistical applications and processes.
