Subject: RE: [plcs-dex] Application domain and Life cycle stage

Title: RE: [plcs-dex] Application domain and Life cycle stage

One could argue as to whether the elements on this V diagram are stages or life cycle processes (which is what ISO 15288 actually normatively specifies).  But that does not negate a reasonable conclusion, which is that we are unlikely to find a single set of life cycle stages that are universally acceptable.

Cheers,
Tim.

P.S.  In ISO 15288 there is an informative Annex that gives six example life cycle stages:  concept, development, production, utilization, support, retirement.  In the normative body of the document, the following appears "The life cycle model comprises one or more stage models, as needed. It is assembled as a sequence of stages that may overlap and/or iterate, as appropriate for the system-of-interest's scope, magnitude, complexity, changing needs and opportunities".

Just a comment

The CADMID cycle assumes large, complex systems. An example of the Systems Engineering V diagram with its stages is attached. The discrete mfg industry uses somewhat different stages

        Two points:

        (i) ISO 15288 does not normatively specify life cycle stages

(ii) UK MoD users would expect to see CADMID (concept, assessment, demonstration, manufacture, in-service, disposal)

        Cheers,
        Tim.

A Part view definition has a context. This is classified in two ways: as Application domain (Digital mock-up, mechanical, electrical, production_assembly, maintenance, etc) and as product life cycle stage (specification, design, manufacture, usage, retirement, etc).

The importance of these classifications is that the different view definitions can define different product structures.

Two questions arise: what is the PLCS preferred set of classifications in each of these two classes? And how should the these be applied and when. For example, if the view used in a task specification is "design stage" and "Mechanical", how will this be compatible with operational feedback which is done at the "usage stage" in the "maintenance view".

One suggestion is to use the life cycle stages in 15288.

        All business users should reply.
