Eric,

One thing that occurred to me as a fairly uncontroversial move that
wouldn't require literally signatures from everyone, wouldn't change
the status quo IPR-wise (for better or worse), would be for TopicMaps.Org
to apply for non-profit status in the US or Europe. I don't think it
matters that much where, but this would allow our copyrights and
trademarks to continue to have a legal home that would continue to
be binding legally. We need to have a legal entity behind our copyrights
to enforce them. Regardless of whether there's ever any legal action
necessary to defend them, this sounds like a good idea.
 
We could still shop around for a standards body such as OASIS if we
really felt it necessary, but at least we'd have a legal basis for
continuing.
