Jon,

I don't know what prompted Davids' question - possibly the
Microsoft so called "XML patent" - (which is being
challenged by the XML community as I understand it).

However - one needs to ask - "Ollie, how did we get into this
fine mess?".

Clearly if we did not have software patents in the first place
we would not have to worry about such issues.

Unfortunately the USPTO has become addicted and dependent
on the fees these generate, and lost sight of the original intent
and purpose - replacing it with a laughable rubber stamping
operation akin to a circus side show where a $1 gets you
three chances to win.  And this has led to everyone being
held hostage by the process itself.

Someone just simply needs to pull the plug....
