Jon,
My first reactions when I saw the new logos were:
- Wow!
- Very strong
- Very substantial
- Very serious
I took a look at them in Opera (which allows me to zoom in and out
with the scroll wheel) and tried to come up with some approaches for
reducing the muddiness that Peter referred to.
Off the top of my head:
- Try increasing the amount of whitespace around "UBL",
especially in the smaller sizes. The ISO logo, for example,
completely masks the background image.
- Consider reducing or even removing the longitude and latitude
lines. While they increase the drama, they do add quite a bit of
business. Of the two, the longitude seem to contribute the most
adversely.
- Consider shifting the contents from outlines to solids (light gray)
Quite a bit of the muddiness seems to be coming from the
anti-aliasing in combination with the relatively thin lines. Using
crisper edges for "UBL" might also help, a bit.
All in all, a very impressive design.

A copy is also attached to this message; unzip it into a directory

As promised, this is the same concept, but done in a way that
should stand up better to reduction and copying. Note that
the
bitmaps are not actually identical but have been tweaked a little
to try to compensate for the effects of reduction (just like old
bitmapped fonts).
What do you think?
Jon
