OBJECT DESIGN ANNOUNCES EXCELON 2.0, INDUSTRY'S FIRST
XML APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT FOR eBUSINESS

New tools, connectivity capabilities make eXcelon the first complete XML
application development environment for building and deploying eBusiness
applications

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Oct. 12, 1999 (From GartnerGroup's IT Expo)-Object
Design, Inc. (Nasdaq: ODIS), a global provider of innovative eBusiness
products and solutions, today announced eXcelon 2.0, the industry's first
eXtensible Markup Language (XML)-based application development environment
for building and deploying eBusiness applications.

eXcelon 2.0 provides developers with the industry's most comprehensive
solution for building and deploying XML eBusiness applications in areas
such as business-to-business, enterprise application integration,
knowledge
management, customer-relationship management and Web eCommerce.

To build these types of applications, developers need to accomplish two
things:
* First, they need to build an eBusiness "infostructure" by accessing and
accumulating existing information from across the enterprise (i.e., from
databases, people's desktops, the World Wide Web, etc.), and then storing
and managing this information as XML.
* Second, they need to build and deploy eBusiness applications on top of
this infostructure that deliver value-added services and capabilities to
customers, employees, partners and prospects.
eXcelon 2.0 provides developers with everything they need to build
eBusiness infostructures and the applications that run on them, including:
* eXcelon Toolbox: A suite of XML development tools for building eBusiness
applications, including the industry's first professional eXtensible
Stylesheet Language (XSL) editor.
* eXcelon Data Server: A powerful eBusiness engine for storing, managing
and delivering XML eBusiness information. It is the only XML data server
that supports XML's extensibility while also enabling developers to blend
structured data (information from databases) with unstructured data (all
other corporate information) for use in eBusiness applications.
* Xconnects: A connectivity solution that enables eBusiness developers to
access information from virtually any corporate data source, convert the
data into XML and then load it into the eXcelon Data Server where it can
be
managed and used for eBusiness applications.

"eXcelon 2.0 has been significantly enhanced to allow for greater
flexibility and functionality," said Ben Moore, managing associate with
MMA, an eSolutions consultancy and ODI partner. "For example, with the
cross-document query option a user can say, 'give me the complete XML
document content for every document in the store where the date
attribute/element is last Tuesday.' This adds a new level of analysis and
performance to the eXcelon Data Server that puts eXcelon 2.0 at the
forefront of XML technology."

One of the major new features of eXcelon 2.0 is its comprehensive support
for XSL. A member of the XML family of standards, XSL is a critical
technology for eBusiness applications because it enables the
transformation
of XML into HTML for presentation to people on the Web. Equally important,
XSL also enables the transformation of XML into other forms of XML, which
ensures that any company can exchange business information with any other
company across the Web.

"XSL is the technology that makes XML visible and useful to other people
and systems," said Dan O'Connor, general manager and senior vice president
for ODI. "XML makes eBusiness possible, but XSL makes eBusiness work."

eXcelon 2.0's new XSL implementation includes the addition of a new tool,
called XSL Stylus, to eXcelon Toolbox. As the industry's first
professional
XSL editing tool, XSL Stylus simplifies the process of creating
data-driven
Web pages by providing an easy-to-use, what-you-see-is-what-you-get
(WYSIWYG) tool for generating XSL.

Furthermore, the eXcelon Data Server has been enhanced to include an XSL
engine that automatically processes XSL and XML to produce HTML for
presentation on the Web, or to transform XML into other forms of XML to
enable universal data transfer between businesses. The eXcelon Data Server
also includes new "industrial strength" eBusiness data-management features
including cross-document queries, semi-full-text search and support for
Microsoft Transaction Server.

eXcelon's Xconnects solution has been expanded to include
"click-and-connect" capability to more than 70 different data sources,
ranging from COBOL to dBase to Act!. This capability makes it simple for
developers to connect to existing business data and convert it into XML
format for use in new eBusiness applications.

For example, a developer building a new customer-relationship management
(CRM) application could use Xconnects to connect, in a matter of minutes,
to customer information located in multiple different data sources across
various corporate departments and manage it all as XML in eXcelon. The
developer can then blend this customer information with semi-structured
data from sources such as word processor documents, email messages, Web
pages, etc., to create a powerful eBusiness infostructure on which to
build the new CRM application.

Pricing, Platform Support and Availability
eXcelon 2.0 is available now from ODI and its partners. Pricing for the
eXcelon 2.0 enterprise edition is $995 for a development license and
deployment licenses start at $15,000 per CPU. eXcelon also comes in a $99
Learning Edition, which provides developers with XML tutorials, training
discounts and full access to the eXcelon Developers Network. A 45-day
trial
version of eXcelon is also available for free download from ODI's Web
site,
www.odi.com/excelon.
