US Patent Delivery
RTIS Purchases 1,000 XMetaL 2.0 licenses to Process Patent Documents for the
US Patent and Trademark Office


TORONTO, ON – October 11, 2000, – SoftQuad Software, Ltd., (OTC BB: SXML) an
internationally recognized developer of XML-enabling technologies announced
today that Reed Technology and Information Services (RTIS) after extensive
evaluation, has chosen XMetaL 2.0, SoftQuad’s award-winning XML content
creation solution, to convert, edit and process patent data for the United
States Patent and Trademark Office (PTO).

RTIS, a member of the Reed Elsevier plc group, has been processing patent
data for the PTO for more than 30 years.  To meet new requirements for the
delivery of patent data in XML, RTIS required a content creation solution
that was flexible enough to handle all types of patent documents and offered
a familiar interface that would allow non-technical employees to become
productive very quickly.

“We are responsible for processing thousands of different patent files each
week,” said Dave Abbott, vice president of technology and development, RTIS.
“XMetaL provides a flexible and adaptable solution that can be customized to
take the guesswork out of XML content creation.”

Beginning in the year 2001, as many as 1,000 internal and external users
will be working with XMetaL to process patent information in XML at RTIS’
three facilities.  Users will use XMetaL to mark up text converted from
scanned documents, as well as to key data directly into a document.  To
create and display chemical and mathematical formula, XMetaL will be
configured to launch specialized processing programs.

the United States Patent and Trademark Office (PTO). Currently, RTIS’ patent

20,000 active patent files per week (recently as many as 50,000) resulting
in the conversion of well over 100 million keystrokes, including 13,500
