Subject: Arbortext Announces Epic 4.2
Arbortext’s Newest Epic Software First to Support Change Tracking and XSLT / XSL-FO for Multichannel Publishing ANN ARBOR, Mich., September 17, 2001 -- Arbortext, Inc., the only global provider of XML-based software that enables the creation, editing and publishing of information from a single-source of content to multiple media types, today announced availability of Epic version 4.2. This latest version supports collaboration through change tracking, inline editing of document components, and easier conversion of multiple content formats to XML. Epic 4.2 also enhances Arbortext’s long-standing support of XML standards through an industry-first combination of full support for XSL by offering both XSLT and XSL-FO publishing engines. Because XSLT enables online publishing and XSL-FO enables print publishing, organizations that implement Epic 4.2 can build an automated multichannel publishing system. Epic Editor’s change tracking capability fully supports the process of information creation, review and approval so that groups of authors and editors can work collaboratively to provide customers with fresh, consistent and complete information on all types of media. "Our mission is to make a difference in people's lives by providing reliable, rapid answers to questions about healthcare, safety and the environment,” said Doug Hughes, project lead for Micromedex, a division of Thomson Health Group based in Denver, CO and a leading provider of computerized and printed information for healthcare professionals and consumers. “The new change tracking capability of Arbortext's Epic Editor 4.2 will make it easier for our editorial teams to work together to develop and maintain the timely, accurate communications upon which our customers depend.” Through its long-standing leadership role in XML, Arbortext continues to protect its customers’ investment by developing standards-compliant software for single-source multichannel publishing. Arbortext’s recent release of Epic version 4.2 builds on that tradition with the following enhanced collaboration features and expanded support of XML standards: · Change tracking. Provides groups of authors the ability to track text and markup changes made to a document. · Publishing standards support. With Epic 4.2, Arbortext now provides the industry’s most powerful support for the Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL), through its embedded XSLT processing engine and XSL-FO processing engine. Arbortext has tuned these engines to handle long, complex documents that require high-quality formatting. · Inline editing of compound documents. Enables authors to edit document components directly within the same window instead of launching separate windows. When an author tries to change a component, Epic automatically checks it out or protects it from changes, based on an inquiry to the repository. · Format conversion. Epic’s enhanced mapping function reduces development time by 75% for setting up conversions from other publishing sources to XML (and from XML to those sources). · Content management. Version 4.2 continues Epic’s tight integration with many content management systems with upgrades to support the latest releases of Documentum (version 4.2) and Oracle iFS (version 1.1.9). · Programming standards support. Through Epic’s new support for JavaScript, existing bindings to Java, C/C++ and COM, and enhanced support for the W3C’s Document Object Model (DOM) API, developers can create customizations using their preferred programming languages. Epic supports DOM Ranges and Level 2 events. · CJK support. Epic 4.2 provides editing support for Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean and Japanese content. “Pounding out web pages and print pages by hand is a waste of human and financial capital and is no longer tolerable,” said PG Bartlett, vice president marketing for Arbortext. “To remedy this, companies are implementing a single source of content so that they can drive a highly automated multichannel publishing system. These systems not only enable companies to perform more work with fewer resources, but also enhance customer satisfaction and streamline internal operations by improving information accuracy, freshness and consistency.” Availability Epic 4.2 will ship in September 2001. All Arbortext customers under maintenance are eligible to receive the Epic Editor 4.2 upgrade at no charge, and the upgrade will be automatically shipped to them.
