ASTM International Upgrades to Advanced Content Management with XyEnterprise
Content@ 3.0

Leading Standards Organization’s “Digital Path Initiative” Drives Upgrade;
Benefits Include Enhanced Workflow Cycles, Web Delivery Options

READING, MA - April 1, 2003 - XyEnterprise, the leading developer of XML
content management and enterprise publishing solutions, announced today that
longtime customer ASTM International, one of the largest voluntary standards
organizations in the world, has completed a successful upgrade to Content@
3.0, the latest version of XyEnterprise’s XML content management and
workflow software. The upgrade is a key component of a comprehensive
business-process-enhancement initiative and systems overhaul within ASTM.

Founded in 1898, ASTM International is a not-for-profit organization that
provides a global forum for the development and publication of voluntary
consensus standards for materials, products, systems, and services across
more than 130 industries. More than 30,000 ASTM International members from
100 nations develop and maintain standards that serve as the basis for
manufacturing, procurement, and regulatory activities around the globe.

In 1995, ASTM International selected XyEnterprise's content management
application to manage the information that comprises the more than 11,000
ASTM standards found in the 77-volume Annual Book of ASTM Standards.
Anticipating the growing importance of the Web and electronic publishing,
they also selected XyEnterprise's XML Professional Publisher (XPP) to
produce both printed and electronic (CD-ROM and PDF format) versions from
the same information source. ASTM also relied on XyEnterprise’s expertise
to develop a custom data server application to index the standards and
volumes. In production by 1996, the comprehensive system provided numerous
benefits, including reduced production times, enhanced speed and accuracy of
standards indexing, and the ability to meet the demand for standards
published in a variety of formats.

More recently, ASTM faced a comprehensive overhaul of its legacy systems and
operating platform. The company had also adopted a far-reaching “Digital
Path Initiative” with several ambitious goals, including (a) implementing a
full electronic workflow initiative, (b) shortening production cycles, and
(c) enhancing its ability to deliver standards information via the Web.

Upgrading to Content@ 3.0’s enhanced user features and new API fit perfectly
with ASTM’s plans, and joint teams from ASTM and XyEnterprise commenced work
on the upgrade in late 2002. Despite the daunting scope of the project -
some 18 gigabytes of data needed to be moved into the new system and
meticulously checked and double-checked - ASTM International Project Leader
Norma Jane Hair describes the upgrade to Content@ 3.0 as “painless.”
Overall, she has nothing but praise for the XyEnterprise team.

“The XyEnterprise team was thorough, attentive, and just absolutely
wonderful to work with,” says Hair. “They were also great teachers - the
entire process was a real education for us.”
The new system went live January 13, 2003, and ASTM International is already
reaping benefits. Content@ 3.0’s easy-to-use interface has been a hit with
ASTM’s in-house editorial staff, enhancing their ability to interact with
and manage the structured content within the Content@ system. The new
interface also greatly reduces the amount of training time needed to get new
staff members (as well as outside contractors that use the system) up to
speed.

Hair also praises the new systems’ ability to produce drafts in PDF format
early in the lifecycle and have them returned to the client. This
contributes to the efficiency of the review and revision process. An
additional benefit will be automatic redlining of the documents under
review.

“Every day our team discovers new benefits in the system that enable us to
make our processes more efficient,” says Hair. “We’re confident that
Content@ 3.0’s advanced functionality and usability will serve us well into
the future.”
