Subject: [chairs] Response from Kavi re training

Hi all,

I'm Chris Higgins, a Project Manager at Kavi, and Karl has forwarded me some
of the issues you've encountered with the Genesys system today. There are
some common issues raised so I'll try to hit the major categories.

BTW, I have post-only access to this list, so will not see replies unless
they are explicitly cc'd or otherwise addressed to me...

Q. This platform restriction is ridiculous. Does this mean Kavi's software
is restricted to a Wintel platform?

A. I agree, it's ridiculous. Kavi's software is completely
platform-neutral, and in fact is developed primarily by users on Debian
Linux, RedHat Linux, and Mac OS X. We all use non-IE browsers (I prefer
Mozilla personally), and develop all our applications to be compatible with
a broad range of Free and commercial browsers.

Unfortunately, we don't make web conferencing software. :) In evaluating
providers for this service (WebEx, Placeware, Raindance, etc.) we found that
none would wholeheartedly commit to supporting anything other than Windows +
IE (or in some cases, obsolete versions of Netscape Navigator on the same
platform). We chose Genesys for a variety of reasons, and have used them
successfully for the most part -- though we do run into configuration
problems quite a bit. We feel this internally as well, and would welcome
suggestions on better providers for the future. Though at the moment I
think we're committed to what we've got -- for these upcoming sessions,
anyway.

But to be absolutely clear on the Kavi side of things -- our applications
are all designed not to rely on versions or special features of browsers.
We simply deliver pages to the user, and accept form input back. If you
ever encounter a compatibility issue with your browser of choice using a
Kavi application, please report it to us!

Q. Is there any value in attending the session voice-only, or web
conference-only?

A. Not much. I think this would be more frustrating than enlightening.

Q. I have IE 6 on XP, and it doesn't like my JVM. Why?

A. I have heard of this issue recently, and don't know a quick solution.
I'll spend some time this week researching it and try to get a satisfactory
fix back to the list.

Q. I'm behind a firewall. Doesn't this work through firewalls?

A. There's a somewhat amusing statement about this in one of their FAQs.
Although I haven't tried this in the past, I will experiment with the
"firewall transparency" option before Friday's session, and see if
performance is acceptable. If it is, we'll use it for the sessions. Here's
the bit from their FAQ:

"Q. What do you mean by "Firewall Transparent"?
A. Firewall transparency means that we are able to communicate within their
network and not be blocked by their firewall, which is their security system
against hackers on the Internet. Firewall transparency only comes in to play
when we are attempting an application sharing session. What we are doing is
checking a series of ports on their firewall, looking for one that will
allow two-way communication, between our Application Sharing server and the
viewers' desktop. If they have an extremely secure firewall, we have created
the ability to application share using HTTP. This is the port that allows
employees to access the Internet. If we have to run application sharing
using HTTP, the response times are quite slow."

---

Please let me know if you have more questions or compatibility issues. I
will work with the Genesys folks over the next few days to address the
issues we've seen so far.
