My experience is that adding property types later on can be painful, because generic code tends to be implemented in terms of big switch/case statements, and usually panics when it sees an unknown type.

That being said, repositories do not need to implement -- AtomPub protocol layers need to.

Pushing the responsibility to deal with tag soup to the client is IMHO the wrong approach.

Also: we had commonly agreed to add the XHTML property type before, so I'm a bit surprised it gets reverted so easily.
