A secondary type could be a virtual type and its property values could be generated or calculated at access time. A property value change on one object could automatically "update" other related objects. (It's not a real update per object. It's only updated in one central place). 
I admit that is might not be obvious.

On the other hand, having the retention and legal hold properties on the object enables the use of CMIS queries. Especially, if a hold covers thousands of objects that could be handy.
