Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (CMIS-718) Add Virttual Folders

    [ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/CMIS-718?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=26431#action_26431 ]

David Churchland commented on CMIS-718:
----------------------------------------

One more push before this issue (and the saved search issue) are retired on Monday.

If we are not going to support virtual folders or saved searches can we have a discussion on whether there is some other logical organisational metaphor that might get supported.

For example how about labels?

We could have a fairly simple user label object which can be related to a Document or a folder. We might specify two standard user labels called 'My Favorites' and 'My Intray'.

Here is a use case...

In Zia FreshDocs when a user marks a Document as a 'Favorite' this could be persisted to the repository.

In the repository when a Document is assigned to a user (in whatever way the repository does this) it would turn up in the CMIS 'My Intray' and thus be auto-synced to my mobile device.

Surely someone out there has a need to find Documents and Folders other than via browsing the Folders and Query?

> Virtual folders are containers that look like folders but are actually backed by a query or some other constraint. If an object is posted to this folder then the server creates an object containing metadata consistent with the Virtual Folder query, that is any object posted to a virtual folder will appear in the folder.
> Similarly to the proposal for Saved Queries this facility provides for persisted navigational facilities.
> Some questions:
> •	How would virtual folders fit into the existing Folder model (e.g. are they returned by getFolderParents)?
> •	Would an unfiled Document still be unfiled if in a virtual folder?
> •	How many repositories implement virtual folders?
