Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (CMIS-718) Add Virttual Folders

    [ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/CMIS-718?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=26436#action_26436 ]

Scott Malabarba commented on CMIS-718:
--------------------------------------

I agree that browse and query do not cover all of the use cases for finding content. Not sure that adding virtual folders to the domain model is the way to go. It seems a little complicated.

A server can provide virtual folders by exposing something like query results as a CMIS folder. Then there's no domain model change, all clients are interoperable, and the server can implement operations on a virtual folder (or not, and mark it read-only).

The weakness in that approach is that there might not be an easy way for users to find such virtual folders. David's labelling idea offers a solution. There's a separate ongoing discussion about tagging -- I think we could use that metaphor instead. So we could address this JIRA by rolling it into tags: as long as tags can be applied to folders and there's some notion of standard or well-known tags, the server-side virtual folders (or normal ones) could be easily located by a standard client.

> Virtual folders are containers that look like folders but are actually backed by a query or some other constraint. If an object is posted to this folder then the server creates an object containing metadata consistent with the Virtual Folder query, that is any object posted to a virtual folder will appear in the folder.
> Similarly to the proposal for Saved Queries this facility provides for persisted navigational facilities.
> Some questions:
> •	How would virtual folders fit into the existing Folder model (e.g. are they returned by getFolderParents)?
> •	Would an unfiled Document still be unfiled if in a virtual folder?
> •	How many repositories implement virtual folders?
