Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (CMIS-718) Add Virttual Folders

    [ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/CMIS-718?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=26437#action_26437 ]

David Churchland commented on CMIS-718:
----------------------------------------

I don't think the 'My Intray' is such a great idea but I still like the 'My Favorites', that is if other repositories support that.

In response to Scott. Florian also suggested having a cmis:Folder that is backed by a query. I am very hesitant to do this. For example documents that were unfiled might suddenly turn up in a "folder". Of course we could give documents within a 'query folder' a different ID so that CMIS sees them as different documents but I am pretty uncomfortable with this.

I am not particularly attached to virtual folders, I just want a more flexible way to organise and find Documents/Folders. I origially suggested saved queries mostly because I assumed it would be an easy win, given that the AtomPub binding implies support for them already.

Tagging or labelling would be even better. Maybe there could be a type of tag (or label) that was backed by a query, rather than being assigned to individual folders and documents?

> Virtual folders are containers that look like folders but are actually backed by a query or some other constraint. If an object is posted to this folder then the server creates an object containing metadata consistent with the Virtual Folder query, that is any object posted to a virtual folder will appear in the folder.
> Similarly to the proposal for Saved Queries this facility provides for persisted navigational facilities.
> Some questions:
> •	How would virtual folders fit into the existing Folder model (e.g. are they returned by getFolderParents)?
> •	Would an unfiled Document still be unfiled if in a virtual folder?
> •	How many repositories implement virtual folders?
